If I could have your attention…

Hi everyone,

Now we’ve hit the end of Week 50 (I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but all Liff comics are categorised by weeks) it’s time to make an announcement.

Liff will be finishing up at the end of Week 52.

At the time of writing this, the site has been up for almost two years and Week 52 would mean a year’s worth of comics. It’s a nice place to finish, really.

As I’ve often said, I created the strip at a time when I was doing practically no art. I wanted a regular project to get the creative juices up and working and, in this sense, it’s definitely been successful. While it’s not a very art-heavy strip – I’m still using images I created in Week 1 – it’s helped push me to come up with something almost every day for two years. You’ve definitely helped with that. Having an audience has kept me on my toes. 😀

The knock-on effect of this has lead to, amongst other things, participating in the OzComics challenges and, at the end of last year, ticking off a bucket list item by being asked to illustrate a story in an upcoming Killeroo comic. It was a fantastic year and I fully intend to keep the momentum and variety going. And this means coming up with new projects.

Having said all of this, I would never consider Liff as completely closed but, for now, it will be wrapping up in two weeks.

I’m letting you know now because I hate sudden endings. If a show I’m watching is getting axed, I’d rather know up front than afterwards. I also prefer a show to end before the shark has jumped, rather than afterwards. LOL

Ayyyyyyyyyyy! And thanks.

Weekender – Devilry

Hi,

It looks like I’m writing again! I said you’d be the first to know when it happened. And… well… here we are. Thanks for your patience. 🙂

During my break from Liff, I’ve been participating in the weekly drawing challenges given by OzComics, led by the awesome Darren Close. If you haven’t already done so, go to the Facebook page and check out the amazing works that have been created! It’s been hard work just trying to produce work that matches the brilliant standards of these people. For the curious, my contribution to these challenges can be seen here.

So… for me, the aim will be the same – to create a daily comic strip loosely based on the silliness that occurs in our household. I hope you visit from time to time and enjoy what you see.

Cheers,

Rob

Liff – Year Two

Hi everyone!

After a break of a few months, it’s time to get back into the saddle and make more Liff.

As I type this, my brain’s buzzing trying to think of ideas to put into comic form. I can feel myself desperately picking through the comings and goings of my family and hoping that, within the day-to-day stuff that all households do, there are things that can be shaped into quick (and hopefully not too cheap) gags.

This is my family’s torment and, if all goes well, your side-splitting hilarity.

I feel I bang on about it all the time, but I do this for fun. I have the utmost respect for those who do it for a living, or are doing it with that aim. I know many brilliant, creative people out there who are trying to earn money from their cartoons (as they damn well should). That’s a bloody hard thing to do and I want them to succeed. Please go and find one of those talented artists, admire their work and either buy their products or pay them in full for the services they provide. I’m doing it for the craic, as the Irish would say, so please view the cartoon in that way.

Without getting too introspective, I’m also doing it to learn stuff. All I mean by that is, this strip isn’t what I normally do and would appreciate constructive feedback so that I get better at it. If I can improve the cartoon, I will. If I can’t, I’ll take your advice on board and keep at it. Naturally, if I’ve done it right, I like that sort of feedback too. 🙂

Of course I’m doing it for your entertainment as well. It would be a bit sad if I wasn’t! Hopefully I’m creating strips that make you think back to an equally stupid thing that’s happened in your household and chuckle. I hope that you visit the site often. I also hope that you Share and Enjoy™ the comic with your friends. So subscribe to the site, ‘Like’ the Facebook page, write comments, print a favourite and stick it on your fridge – that sort of thing! I’d be quite chuffed if you do.

Well… that’s about it. Better start writing now. Thanks for reading!

Cheers,

Rob

This is Liff

Hi good people (whoever you may be),

For a few years I made cartoons on h2g2, the Hitch-hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy website. Then life got in the way, it all became too much and so I stopped.

I’d like to start it up again, but not on h2g2.

  • That moment’s passed. Fresh start and all that.
  • Most of the wonderful friends I made at the site have left.
  • The BBC, who own h2g2, are closing it.*
The strip was called h2g2life, but now I’m calling it Liff, a title based on an obscure Douglas Adams reference. In short, it’s not quite life, which is a fitting description. I hope you enjoy it!
Cheers,
Rob

*Actually, they’re selling it.
